Hairspray – a musical with music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman and a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan, based on the 1988 John Waters film Hairspray. The songs include 1960s-style dance music and “downtown” rhythm and blues. In 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, teenager Tracy Turnblad’s dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight. She then launches a campaign to integrate the show. Hairspray is a social commentary on the injustices of parts of American society in the 1960s.  The musical’s original Broadway production opened on August 15, 2002and won eight Tony Award.

Songs for a New World

MLT presents Jason Robert Brown’s

Songs for a New World sits on the boundary between musical and song cycle, but it is neither; it is an abstract musical, a series of songs all connected by theme rather than narrative.
Composer Jason Robert Brown has said of his show, “It’s about one moment. It’s about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back.

Songs for a New World is beautifully written and performed by a talented cast and three special guest artists.
